When Jelani Cobb was named dean of the Columbia Journalism School, he became the 14th person and the first African American to lead the institution, which was founded by Joseph Pulitzer in 1912. He also became the third consecutive New Yorker staff writer to assume the prestigious title, following Steve Coll and Nicholas Lemann.
