In 2006, I wrote a column for The Wall Street Journal that began with the sentence “It’s time we start thinking of Vladimir Putin’s Russia as an enemy of the United States.” At the time, the criticism I got came from the left. But if I wrote the same column today, most of the flak would come from the right.
