Fred Ferretti, who covered a panoply of breaking news events for New York City newspapers before becoming best known for his prolific writing on cuisine, comestibles and cooking for The New York Times and then Gourmet magazine, died in Montclair, N.J.

After a newspaper career that began with The New York Herald Tribune and ended with The Times in 1986, Mr. Ferretti became a contributing editor at Gourmet and wrote a column called Gourmet at Large.
