During the past week, news trickled out via competing scoops that Mark Thompson, the former C.E.O. of the Times and director-general of the BBC, would become CNN’s C.E.O. and editor-in-chief. Sir Mark—Thompson was knighted in June by King Charles III—who will officially take over in early October, will find a network in crisis.
