While I was living in Moscow many years ago, I often got together with my biologist friend Kolya. When he wasn’t in the wilds of Siberia following birds, he would observe them on the crowded, smoggy streets of the Russian capital. He was fascinated by how crows dragged bread too stale to eat over to puddles to soak. Crows, he marveled, know how to use tools!
