As the presidential candidate’s armored vehicle pulled up to the park, Otto Sonnenholzner’s security guard told him to wait in the back seat.

“I’m going to secure the car,” he said.

Nearly a week had passed since a presidential candidate was assassinated, and Sonnenholzner was trying to figure out how to campaign again. Surrounded by a team of men in bulletproof vests, the 40-year-old candidate prepared to step into one of the most dangerous cities in Ecuador, facing a crowd of 200 people and hoping for the best.
