Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a social media coach to help journalists connect with new audiences on social media platforms. The successful candidate will be able to develop strategic guidance and practical tips to leverage reporters’ unique voices and talents to reach new audiences at a pivotal time in the crowded media landscape.

The person who fills this role will have an opportunity to coach journalists seeking to connect with audiences and craft clear audience growth or engagement tactics that foster a healthy dialogue and develop online communities. A strong candidate will be highly organized, a confident independent worker, and a clear communicator interested in staying up to date on and sharing information or feedback about how to develop audience connection and resonance amid changes in social, video and audio platforms. They will have a keen sense of platform and industry best practices or trends and will be plugged into what is happening online. The ideal candidate should be a team player with a passion for journalism, who likes a continuous learning environment and crafting growth strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strong ideas for strategies to grow the reach of Washington Post journalists on social media while adhering to all Post standards and social media policies
  • Coach and offer feedback on best approaches for team and individual use of social platforms
  • Share feedback, guidance and strategies for journalists to use when engaging with audiences on social platforms
  • Act as a sounding board for questions from journalists about best practices on social platforms and how to foster engagement with audiences, sources and colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of journalism experience
  • Audience engagement experience and a demonstrated ability to work across social platforms
  • Well-versed in social platforms including Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit
  • Ability to think creatively about innovative ideas for engaging dialogue formats that foster growth
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment
  • A record of accomplishment of conversational writing and creative use of social media
  • A passion for The Washington Post’s journalism and its mission.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
