Kentucky Paper to Be Sold, Ending Family’s 140-year History

From an AP story headlined “Kentucky paper to be sold, ending family’s 140-year history”:

The Gaines family has agreed to sell the Daily News of Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Carpenter Newsmedia LLC, an affiliate of Boone Newspapers Inc.  The deal is expected to close June 30 and also includes a weekly shopper and three magazines.

The family’s history with the newspaper dates back 140 years, according to Cribb, Cope & Potts, a merger and acquisition firm representing the family. The newspaper said it is one of the oldest family-owned papers in the southeastern U.S.

“It was indeed a difficult decision, and it wasn’t one that was made quickly or easily,” Pipes Gaines, publisher emeritus of the Daily News and co-owner of the newspaper along with his sons, Publisher Scott Gaines and Editor Steve Gaines, said. “For 140 years, it’s been an incredible legacy. We look back on it with a lot of pride.”

Boone Newspapers owns or manages newspapers and other publications in 12 states, including several in Kentucky.

“We look forward to getting started and meeting the staff, rolling up our sleeves and getting to work in support of their efforts to serve readers and advertisers,” Boone Newspapers President and CEO Todd H. Carpenter said.

The Gaineses will remain owners of radio stations WDNS and WKCT, the newspaper said.
