When Journalists Look Back

By Jack Limpert

At a late December lunch of old journalists, we talked about how lucky we were that the crossroads in our lives had somehow taken us into journalism. One of us escaped being forced into insurance sales by his family. By flunking organic chemistry, I didn’t follow my father into the Kimberly-Clark Corporation.

We all felt we’d led interesting lives and had a lot of fun. We thought we shared two traits:

Money was not the most important thing in our lives. None of us got rich and that was okay. We have a lot of good memories and good stories.

And we all felt we had pretty good bullshit detectors. That’s what we thought journalism is mostly about.
