Were College Students the Key to Joe Biden Winning Wisconsin?

By Jack Limpert

In 2016, Wisconsin was one of the surprises in Hilary Clinton’s loss to Donald Trump—Clinton lost the state to Trump by  23,000 votes.

In this year’s election, Joe Biden won Wisconsin by 20,000 votes.

The University of Wisconsin—my alma mater—is in Madison, also the state capital. A case could be made that Dane County, where Madison is the dominant city, was the key to Biden winning Wisconsin.

In 2016, Clinton won Dane County by 146,000 votes. In 2020, Biden won Dane by 181,000 votes.

Biden’s increased plurality of 45,000 votes in Dane County was enough to win Wisconsin.

The University of Wisconsin’s team colors are red and white, but I wonder if getting out the student vote was the key to turning the state blue for Biden.
