It’s People Who and Things That

From the New York Times website on January 11 about the impending sale of the New Republic:

In late 2014 Mr. Hughes decided to replace Franklin Foer, a former top editor that he had hired back to run the magazine in 2012.

From the Washington Post’s Politics website on January 14, quoting Donald Trump’s outrage over a poorly performing sound system at a rally in Pensacola, Florida:

“Whoever the hell bought this mic system—don’t pay the son of a bitch that put it in…”
It’s disrespectful to refer to people as “that.” Things are “that,” people are “who.”
