One of the rituals at Washington’s annual Gridiron dinner is the Marine Band playing the anthems of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. As each anthem is played, attendees who served in that branch of the military stand at attention.
At Saturday night’s dinner, bringing together more than 600 of Washington’s media and political elite, an estimated 25 attendees stood as the anthem of their service was played.
