“Half a century ago, working quietly in a New Orleans laboratory, Ruth Benerito helped smooth the fabric of modern life. In so doing, she helped liberate people from hours of household drudgery.”

The Associated Press brings vigor to a lead with an off-beat verb:

“A motorist accused of smashing a window and catalyzing a bloody encounter between a group of bikers and the driver of a sports-utility vehicle was arraigned Sunday…”
