On Friday night President Obama signed the order to begin $85 billion in sequester spending cuts at midnight.
At 8 a.m. on Saturday Jamie DuPree of Cox Radio sent out a tweet: “$6 million was cut from the budget for Gallaudet University.” Within an hour it was retweeted by the AP, National Journal, Roll Call, and the Washington City Paper: “#sequester #dc RT @jamiedupree: $6 million was cut from the budget for Gallaudet University.”
Nobody wants to see cuts that could hurt the chances for deaf students to get a good education but journalists who started out covering city council meetings in small towns might recall what sometimes happened when the council threatened to cut $10,000 from the school budget. The school system was known to respond, “Because of these unexpected budget cuts it now appears we won’t have the money to buy needed equipment for the high school football team.”
