When the Secret Service Is Gone

By Jack Limpert

A postscript to this week’s blog post about  Secret Service protection: Vice Presidents traditionally keep their Secret Service agents for six months after leaving office. In July 1969 I met with former Vice President Humphrey the week his Secret Service detail left him. Normally very upbeat, he wasn’t happy that day. He said his life now was much more complicated. He had to drive himself to events, and then, worst of all, he sometimes had to find a place to park. “And,” he added, “I have to pick up my laundry and dry cleaning.”
